The Democrats Leadership Vacuum
by Jeff OBryant
In my latest column I ask where the true leaders are these days. Obviously, I note that you can skip the ranks of the Democratic Party if you want to find any.

The true leadership today recognizes that in a democracy the authority of government comes from the governed. It is outrageous to pretend those who are funding this war with their tax dollars and sacrificing their loved ones have no say in the matter.
You write of “the Iraqis’ dreams of democracy and peace.” But the majority of Iraqis polled do not favor a democracy; however, the majority DO approve of the attacks against the coalition forces. If they so desire democracy, why are Iraqi people by the tens of thousands not grabbing guns and fighting alongside us?
The said truth is, no matter how well-intentioned our efforts have been, we will not be able to bring peace to Iraq by attempting to force our vision of their future upon them. We are seen as intruders and are viewed as having hostile intentions. And the true leaders understand this and must do something about it.

And what of Hoshyar Zebari, the foreign minister of Iraq, who recently asked that we not leave his country until the job is done?

What about the 144 Iraqi legislators (a majority of the 275 member parliament) who earlier this month signed a legislative petition calling upon the United States to set a timetable for withdrawal?
Again I have to ask: where is the Iraqi support? Where are the brave Iraqi patriots who should be fighting alongside us if they truly desire democracy? If they desire democracy why were we not — as Cheney predicted — greeted as liberators? Why do the majority of Iraqis approve of the attacks on our troops? And why is Vice-President Cheney and our government having to pressure their lawmakers not go on a two-month vacation right in the middle of their civil war?
I believe these things speak volumes.
